The City of Altamont
Altamont is a growing community with a population of 2,300, located in Effingham County along Interstate 70 and U.S. Route 40, ideally situated between St. Louis, Missouri and Terre Haute, Indiana. Our community is committed to building a vibrant future with a strong foundation in education, featuring an excellent school system, a thriving business district, a variety of churches, and welcoming residential neighborhoods and subdivisions. Agriculture plays a key role in the areaβs economy, alongside local manufacturing opportunities. Altamont offers a range of activities that bring our community together, including the Altamont Living Museum, the natural beauty of Ballard Nature Center, and the excitement of the Effingham County Fair. Historical sites like the Dr. Charles Wright House and events like the Annual Mill Road Threshermans Association Steam, Gas & Threshing Show also highlight our rich heritage.
On August 8, 1872, the town of Altamont adopted the village form of government which consists of a mayor and four council members. On April 16, 1901, the voters of the village of Altamont adopted the city organaziation form of government and became the city of Altamont.
